CELEBRATING OVER 50 YEARS SELLING QUALITY SOD

FAQ

These are some common questions that clients ask us at W. Hoffman Sod Company:

Q.

How quickly should sod be planted after it is delivered?

A.

All sod that we sell is high-quality Scott's Elite bluegrass, and it is designed to thrive in local soil and climate conditions. However, it is perishable and should be planted within 24 hours of delivery.

Q.

How much water does new sod need?

A.

New sod can easily dry out. To prevent this from happening, you should water it immediately after it is laid. It should be watered every day for the first week and every other day for the second week. Avoid watering so much that the ground gets muddy. After approximately two weeks, the new sod should be established, and you may follow a regular watering pattern based on the season. We can help you determine a watering schedule upon request.

Q.

How frequently should new sod be mowed?

A.

Mowing is important for optimal sod health, but you should not mow too soon. Ideally, you should mow the new sod approximately two weeks after installation, and the mower blade should be raised so that it is higher than normal for a few weeks. This will help the sod to grow to optimal health.

Q.

When is the right time to fertilize new sod?

A.

Based on the climate and soil conditions in the Metro area, fertilizing is recommended approximately two to three times per year. Fertilizer is applied to sod before it is delivered, so it may not require another treatment for two or three months.
